The Preschool Awareness of Word and Print Concepts (PAWPrint Concepts™) is a validated measure of print concepts knowledge developed for use with preschoolers ages 3 to 5 years old. PAWPrint Concepts is designed to be administered using the companion storybook Forgetful Fred Gets Ready for Bed™. When reading the book, examiners are provided with specific instructions on when and how to present each item, including specific text (e.g., ask, “What is this word here?”) and actions (e.g., “Point to the words in the speech bubble.”). The entire assessment includes 17 items and takes approximately seven minutes to administer. The scoring form has a graph that helps examiners interpret children’s responses to each item based on what is expected for their age and individual overall score. PAWPrint Concepts can be used to identify children with delays in print concepts knowledge and to measure growth over time.  Print concepts knowledge includes children’s understanding that written words represent meaningful ideas and are connected to spoken language. It also includes knowing how print works – for example, in English we read from left to right and from top to bottom. Understanding the ways in which print works provides children with a strong foundation for later reading.  Children should know most of the skills assessed in PAWPrint Concepts before they start kindergarten.
